A message from Elizabeth A. Reich, M.D

If you're a woman, chances are you've at least thought about breast cancer. The news of breast cancer is so prevalent in our lives. As a doctor and woman, I can identify with these fears and strive to develop a connection with every breast cancer patient. Breast cancer patients, like all cancer patients, need empathy and an understanding of the emotional issues associated with the disease.

Today, cancer treatment is multifaceted. My goal as a physician is to ensure that women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer receive all the necessary input, recommendations and evaluations from several key specialists. These specialists, who become partners in my patients' care, include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and plastic or reconstructive surgeons.

I've found that in addition to receiving high quality medical care, breast cancer patients also need strong social support. Jupiter Medical Center offers the "Living with Breast Cancer Support Group" as well as several other support groups for patients with all types of cancer.

Together, we can make a difference in this disease. Awareness - one person telling another - is key. Women need to be continually aware of and educated about their breasts and the care of their bodies. Mammography is the single most effective method of early detection. It can identify cancer several years before physical symptoms develop. Self-breast examinations also help detect cancer in its early, curable stages.

The oncologists at Jupiter Medical Center welcome the input of our peers with weekly multidisciplinary cancer conferences. These meetings among local physicians focus on discussing cases and our approaches to patient care. We take that sharing of knowledge and information a step further with our commitment to ongoing education. Each year, Jupiter Medical Center brings in experts from noted cancer center around the country including Memorial Sloan-Kettering, M.D. Anderson and others, to make presentations about current cancer theory and technology. All of these things come together to bring you the best in cancer care.
