A message from Juan E. Sanchez, M.D.

I recall a 41-year-old woman with acute leukemia. By the time she was referred to me for specialty care, she was overcome with fear and ready to end her life. I listened to her fears and explained her options. It was worth the time to make her feel stronger and more able to undergo the necessary treatment to address the leukemia. She walked out of my office more willing to beat the disease and she did. Today, she's cured.

This woman illustrates the importance of a center that is not only dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care but also human care. I often see patients who have been to larger cancer centers locally and around the nation. The difference is not in the quality of care we provide because we have the same technological capabilities as any comprehensive center in the U.S. The difference is that patients don't feel lost at Jupiter Medical Center.

They feel that they are a part of our very close knit family. My training allows me to provide the most advanced care. For instance, we are among the first community cancer centers in the country to be implementing treatments using monoclonal antibodies combined with chemotherapy for the treatment of lymphoma. For the first time, we have a new way of targeting cancer cells. We are increasing outcomes without the sometimes harsh side effects of traditional cancer treatment.

Still, just as important as this state-of-the-art treatment is, I believe that my approach to medicine is equally important. Sometimes, it takes time to listen to patients and support them with my words and knowledge. That's what medicine is all about.

We are here not to treat the disease, but rather to treat the patient.
